Kennedy Center ANY GIVEN CHILD Recognized Programming includes:

LIVEArts @ Hancher 2016 NEW in 2016-17!

District 8th graders traveled to Hancher Auditorium, the University of Iowa’s “Largest Classroom on Campus,” to experience a world class arts performance. This year’s event featured Step Afrika! The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence, generously funded by the ICCSD Foundation, Iowa Arts Council, and National Endowment for the Arts.

Dance in the Junior High Schools NEW in 2016-17!

Disco Intervention is offered to every 7th and 8th grader Spring 2017, generously funded by HAVlife. Disco Interventions allows students to discover how much dance they can do and how quickly they can learn. Teachers and staff can join in the fun!

2nd grade Dance Project NEW in 2015!

All 2nd graders in the district receive dance instruction with a professional dance instructor during their PE class. This coincides with the PE department’s rhythm unit. Partners providing dance instruction include teachers from National Dance Academy, Debut DanceArts Share, and Nolte Academy of Dance.

Visiting Author

Each year a children’s author is selected to present to all elementary schools on a grade level rotating basis. Curriculum is written to reflect the experiences and writing tools the author uses.

Symphony Goes to School

District 4th graders are provided the opportunity to attend a performance by a full symphony orchestra. In full ensemble, the orchestra provides a curriculum guide in advance for better understanding and increased interest.

Music in the Schools

Musical ensembles from Orchestra Iowa perform characteristic brass, woodwind, and string quartets, respectively for district 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders.

M.C. Ginsberg Artist in Residence

Through the generous sponsorship of M.C. Ginsberg Objects of Art and parent/teacher organizations, 5th graders work with a local teaching artist in discovering curricular connections to the arts.

UIMA School Programs

To enrich and enhance 7th grade global studies unit on Africa, the University of Iowa Museum of Art provides African art pieces and a docent to travel to the junior highs, providing tangible cultural and artistic examples.
